Biography

Whitman Miller serves as the Director of the National Ballast Information Clearinghouse (NBIC), a partnership of SERC and the U.S. Coast Guard designed to inform Congress about the impacts of commercial shipping on coastal marine invasive species. Dr. Miller also Co-Directs the Chesapeake Bay/SERC node of the MarineGEO & Tennenbaum Marine Observatories Network. Much of his research focuses on the ecological effects of non-native species, including trying to understand why some species succeed and others fail to invade new habitats and geographic regions. Additionally Miller studies the effects of elevated CO2 and acidification on the growth, calcification, and ecology of marine and estuarine species. He is especially interested in understanding and monitoring the dynamics of acidification and carbonate chemistry in coastal marine ecosystems. He mentors undergraduates, graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and serves on variety of technical and scientific advisory boards.
